My driver for NEFR wants to run a set of his gravel tires on my car for recce. I’m not thrilled with the idea of running a tire that’s more than an inch smaller than stock and am worried about it having a negative long term effect on the car. Are my concerns valid or am I being paranoid?

As long as they are all the same size you will be fine. Your Speedo will read too fast though.

Make sure 15's clear your brakes.
An inch plus is a little extreme. I’ve routinely run half to 3/4 smaller in winter without issue

mostly paranoia. if the brakes clear, and the suspension clears, and the 1/2" of ground clearance change isn’t a problem for you (bonus 1/2" lower GC!), then it’s really just a mater of your speedo and odo being off by the indicated percent. (unless the offset of the wheels is signifficantly different, in which case your scrub radius will change and that *COULD* effect handling negatively, but should be “safe” for the car, no mater what. Under real race conditions there’s a non-zero chance the reduced wheel diameter will effect brake cooling efficiency and lead to fade or overheating that might not occur with larger diameter rims... but for a recce i doubt that’ll be a problem... in fact, it probably won’t be a problem in your average rally conditions at all, only on a road coarse...

Its smaller than stock? nah. so long as the calipers clear the rims there is no issue.

As long as all 4 tires are the same size the awd system will be fine. Brake clearance and ride height are the next concerns but if the wheels have some space from the front callipers the half inch of lost ride height is unlikely to pose a problem.
Look at it as an excuse to drive faster (than the indicated speed anyway).

The biggest negative long term effect on your car will be in the form of a tree, not tire size.

Rally car!
Watch your distances - ODO and computer will likely be way off if you are trying to take recce notes.. Might not be a big deal for stage rallies but it would kill a TSD..

Thanks. I think you're grossly underestimating rally brake abuse though. Last rally using WRX brakes and race pads we burned the brake fluid black in 25 stage miles

Um, aren’t those sizes for different diameter wheels? Sort of a bigger issue than section width...

The gravel tires are already mounted on wheels. I'm not trying to put them on my stock size wheels

Then what’s the worry?

Just wanted to make sure running smaller diameter tires wasn't bad for the differentials or anything

It would put less strain on them, so quite the opposite. Although if the offset of the wheels were crazy different that might cause a problem.
